On Saturday April 21st, we are hosting another pet themed fundraiser event here at Muttonhead Beaches with a day packed with photography and fun with all proceeds going towards the No Hungry Pets Project! No Hungry Pets Project is in their 2nd year of supplying pet food to local human food banks and organizations that service clients in need, many of whom have pets in need. With the help of local pet photographer Marcia Leeder, your pets will be forever captured in a lovely photograph forever!
For your suggested $30 donation, you'll receive a digital image as well as your image on an 8" x 8" stretched frame canvas, ready to hang (your canvas will be ready for pickup in 7-10 days), as well as a complimentary Mattie & Finnegan canine cupcake!
We will also be collecting cans of wet cat food if you have any to spare for those little guys in need! All proceeds support the No Hungry Pets Project. Pets bring joy to our lives and deserve to have pet parents who genuinely love and care for them despite financial status.
This will be a walk-in event, so please come early, and with the popularity of our photographers, a bit of a wait will be expected. But fear not! Since it’s being hosted at our cozy Beaches shop, there will be lots to look at is you fancy a wander while your waiting for your bets glamour shot!
If you and your pooch are in the area, or just want to relish in the great weather forecast that is expected for this weekend, stop by and give to those in need, and make a day of it! If you can’t make it out this time around, we will also be hosting another of the same event featuring local photographer Alex Bruce on Saturday May 6th to really get the community to come together and give to buddies that need it the most!
Visit the event page here for details, see you there!
]]>Le Local opened their doors in 2010 with the desire to offer exclusively Canadian-made clothing, jewelry and accessories on one of the oldest streets in town. The love story between shop and customer has grown ever since then, which sparked the decision to move to a bigger and better location to accommodate.. just next door! The shop is cared for and curated by 7 passionate stylists who are presently working on finding the right partners and product to transpose the boutique online, so stay tuned for their website launch coming very soon! If you would still like to see what BLL is up to now however, visit their various social media outlets like Facebook and Instagram!
The store’s atmosphere is a warm and welcoming one, in a hand-made/industrial design and functional environment. In an evolving neighborhood, the street they are located on is unique; Many services are present but not many chains have storefronts there. Mainly independent businesses are mixed-in with very colorful residents. In a small evolving neighborhood, this is great news for their outdoorsy shop a just bridge away from parliament hill.
If the atmosphere isn't enough to pull you in, BLL are keeping their product within the same vein as us here at Muttonhead. They only offer hand-made/Canadian made goods. Again, much like Muttonhead, BLL stands out of mainstream fashion by being urban and adventurous, functional without compromising style, and fundamentally Canadian which serves as a sort of camaraderie between company and customer.
If you’re ever in the area, pop by and get your Canadiana fix!
]]>Now, we’ve given you a little rundown about our waterproof parkas in the past- but what about all of our other waterproof gear? A common question we often get is if our waterproof products are actually waterproof. Rest assured, they are (just dont go swimming in them, alrightyyy?)! Let's take a sec to revisit what Polyurethane actually is so you can get a better idea of what is protecting you out there!
Polyurethane is a synthetic resin used to coat and protect a wide range of commonly used items (such as footwear, varnishes and even furniture!), designed to keep the weather out and the comfort and heat in. In this case, our waterproof gear is coated with a matte polyurethane shell surrounding the garment. With its inner fleece lining, it aids in keeping the damp, wetness out and your body heat close.
Now let’s take a look at what products we have to offer to better suit your unique commutes or adventures, shall we? We’ll start from the head and work our way down, there's that much to choose from!
Whether you’re a 5 or 6 panel sort of person, we offer both styles in our waterproof material. Perfect for people that hate umbrellas, or even folks out there that wear glasses- who wants speckled glasses and 50% less vision on their way to work? Definitely not us. We’re reaching for a cap before an umbrella any day!
Key features
Our waterproof hoodies are just like our regular hoodies, but won’t leave you soaked while you’re walking around in the rain! We offer two styles, one in our classic Camping Hoodie style, and one in our Mountain Zip with full zipper closure.
Key Features
Following in the same vein as our waterproof hoodies, We also offer a longer parka version for people that are wanting more of a full coverage coat! We love the length of this coat, and the fact that it sports deep and wide pockets makes for useful places to stash your belongings if you choose to not carry a bag. No umbrellas needed either with the hood lending a lengthy arch over the forehead area, and a close snap closure around the neck for a snug fit.
Key features
We aren’t done yet! Oh no, we still have some cool waterproof products to tell ya about, which brings us to our waterproof poncho! These are perfect for dog walkers, backpackers, and those who want to still keep their regular coat on while being protected and dry. Just pop it over your entire outfit, purse, backpack, whatever! It’s got a deep hood, high neck, and wide pockets for whatever you need east access to. Great for people with lots of gear!
Key features
Last but not least we have our waterproof 3-Way pants. Our most versatile pant, the Waterproof 3-Ways can be worn for warmth while cycling through the city or as a slush or snow pant, that will keep you extra dry in the damper months. These pants can be worn in three ways, 1) Cinched 2) Cuffed 3) Straight.

If all of these options aren’t enough to make you rethink your spring attire, what more could you ask for?
Floorplay Socks just celebrated their 5 year anniversary as a company, and it all started with their first store on the bustling Queen Street West. After much success, they then opened another at Yonge and Eglinton, and a third one on Locke Street in Hamilton a year later! Talk about a take over! If that wasn't enough excitement for us and the FP team, in the next few weeks they will be setting up shop in the Distillery District for their pièce de résistancee- their largest location yet!
There's no way to leave unhappy or empty handed with the fun curated selection they provide for their customer base, and in turn bring in lots of business for the neighborhoods they occupy as well!
Being a company that is super supportive of Canadian made goods, FloorPlay try to sell as many Canadian made socks (like Muttonhead!) as they can. In a society obsessed with fast fashion, it can be challenging to find; but they carry and promote locally made and local businesses as much as possible! Proving staff designed socks and having OCAD students have their hand at designing a few as well- these are only some of the ways they show their support!
With an ever growing team and an extensive online store, there's no shortage of opportunities for them to make all your sockiest dreams to come true! So whether your looking to spice up your wardrobe with a bold sock or just want to rep your hometown team- FloorPlay is the place to go!

Similarly, if you’ve ever purchased one of our Classic Camping Hoodies, you’ve probably noticed that it’s been around for some time as well. But if you’ve ever wondered just for how long, well we are proud to say that it was a piece that debuted with our first ever Muttonhead collection all the way back in 2009. Year after year, this staple piece has made its way back into each Fall/Winter collection without fail, gracing our shelves by popular demand and customer satisfaction.
We realize the importance of quality garments; ones that stand the test of time, and our Camping Hoodie is certainly among those pieces that holds up and never goes out of style.
From Waterproof, to fleece, Sherpa materials, to two tone editions- we’ve tried to incorporate as many interesting ideas for our Camping Hoodies to keep our older customers nostalgic, and our new ones feeling fresh with each new tweaked design.
Recently, we’ve added something new and exciting to our Camping Hoodie roster; a series of patterned hoodies named after some really great places across our country! These patterned hoodies offer that same fleecy feel that you know and love about our Camping Hoodies, but offer a bit of a different spin for those that want to make it more of a statement piece.
So what makes the Camping Hoodie so special? We think the fact that it is completely unisex is a good enough reason as any to start. The fit and design itself is what keeps this piece from making its way back, with its flattering rounded bottom, a deep enough hood, and tortoise shell buttons. It's a spin on a classic hoodie, but offers the comfort of your favourite blanket- all the while looking great and offering a unique structure, flattering for any body type. Whether you’re layering it in the winter, wearing it with your tracksuit, or taking along hiking to keep you dry, there are literally a million ways to wear it. We like to layer it with a warm plaid button down underneath, or a quilted vest overtop; but whatever material you dig, you can always count on this hoodie to fit perfectly no matter the style you’re going for.
Sample sales are always a great way to peep new hopefuls and old reliables! Make sure you are up to date and subscribed to our emails so you can catch our next Sample Sale and snag one (or two!) for yourself!"
]]>Let’s start by saying that these pants are another classic Muttonhead design that returns year after year by popular demand and trusted quality. They are the type of pant that bypass gender norms and can be worn by anyone, anytime!
The best part about these pants is probably the fact that the fit works for all body types. It features an elastic waistband paired with a drawcord for extra support, so you can expand and contract the waist with ease and comfortability. The pants give enough room around the thigh area for mobility and then start to taper around the calves for a more all around put-together look. Finally, there is another elastic band around the ankles which is great for a number of reasons. They are easily tucked into boots in the winter, and stretch enough to hike them up for a shorter look towards the warmer seasons.
The tapered fit of these pants seems to be a great draw, but the fact that they come in a plethora of colors and materials is also a great selling point! You can choose between a denim look, rust canvas or even a solid black and the list goes on.
If you are the type of person who prefers to include transition pieces into your wardrobe, and find it easier to take a look from day to night or dressy to casual conveniently- these are the pants for you! Equipped with 4 pockets, and reinforced stitching at the seams, they are a dependable choice for any occasion.

First on the docket we have our Waterproof Fishtail Parka!
A common question we get often is if our Waterproof Parkas are actually waterproof. Rest assured, they are! Let's take a look at what Polyurethane actually is so you can get a better idea of what is protecting you out there!
What is Polyurethane?
A synthetic resin used to coat and protect a wide range of commonly used items, designed to keep the weather out and the comfort and heat in. In this case, our Waterproof Parka is coated with a matte polyurethane shell surrounding the garment. With its inner fleece lining, it aids in keeping the damp and wetness out and your body heat close.
Common things made from Polyurethane:
Furniture and lining which we so often use! The nice firm foam you get in those luxurious sofas? Polyurethane! You can also find this versatile material incorporated into thermal insulation in jackets and building structures to keep the cool out and the warmth in!
Footwear and protective coating are also common items which use this durable material- especially in athletic footwear to provide comfort and support. And lastly for now but definitely not least, another instance where this material is handy is in varnishes on our cars designed to help defend and even prevent scratches and damage from the weather year after year.
So as you can see, we rely on polyurethane much more than some of us even realize even on a daily basis- why not protect yourself with something tried and tested to be one of the best?
Some great features you can find in our Waterproof parkas:
We love the length of this coat, and the fact that it sports deep and wide pockets makes for useful places to stash your belongings if you choose to not carry a bag. No umbrellas needed either with the hood lending a lengthy arch over the forehead area, and a close snap closure around the neck for a snug fit.
If all this still doesn't convince you of the benefits of owning one of these coats, we urge you to stop by the shop and try one on for yourself. We have a feeling you wont leave disappointed (or empty handed!)

]]>The notion of a well thought out wardrobe can be daunting to some and we totally get it. The very idea of having to go through your closet and veto certain pieces can seem tedious and quite frankly boring, but you may find decluttering to actually be a therapeutic feeling, rather than a chore. So why not take a daunting task and turn it into a challenge? One to better your life, routine, bank account and of course personal waste. You don’t need to BUY everything to HAVE everything you need. Figure out what you need and work from there. If you are finding yourself reaching less for certain pieces (or barely at all anymore), do not let comparison get the best of you; bench it and move on!
Let’s start from the top, and work our way down; tees and shirts. Neutral colours like whites, greys, black and browns and even denim are the sorts of shades that are never going to get old, nor will they seem repeated. Maybe stick to plain or simple patterns, or shirts with dexterous colours- like plaids and tartans. The colour ways in them allow for many different bottom alternatives, jackets, and leave room for layering. As for bottoms, you’re going to want to pick out equally as versatile pieces that won’t seem repeated or outplayed. A good pair of jeans, perhaps a pair of khaki coloured trousers, colour pallets like navy, black and even dark grey also help keep your outfits feeling fresh.
Moving on to jackets and accessories. These items can easily be the influential factor in whether or not you decide your outfit is feeling too repeated or not. For example, an overcoat with a simple collar can be taken from dressy or work appropriate, to casual in minutes. Stick a hoodie underneath your coat and throw on a hat for a more laid back look. Make sure to have pieces that are practical, serve their purpose, and make sure you love them!
How you style your looks plays a big part in using your wardrobe to your full advantage. Try finding as many ways to wear a piece as possible whether it’s layering, having one of your favourite fitting shirts in two different colours, styling the same outfit with different accessory pieces- the possibilities should be endless!
If you feel you’re wardrobe could stand to be bigger, by all means go for it! Everyone needs some flexibility in their lives and not everyone's lifestyles are the same. These tips are more of helpful suggestions we find to work; a simple stepping stone to creating an effortless wardrobe that fits you. Dressing yourself shouldn't feel like a hassle, it should make you feel good, and buying clothing of quality and longevity feels good.

If you’ve ever stopped by our Roncesvalles location, you can always expect to see our dog buddies hanging out with us while we work- their happy faces eager to greet anyone that will have them. A dog is also Muttonheads mascot, the face of our company! So if you are an animal enthusiast like we all are here at Muttonhead, you know that animal welfare is a huge priority that shouldn’t need to be explained or defended, yet unfortunately it still needs people like us to raise our voices up and fight for the voices they don’t have. This is why Muttonhead has teamed up with the Toronto based organization Save our Scruff to bring a dog adoption event to our two locations in hopes of finding these sweet angels new homes while simultaneously educating people about animal welfare.
Save Our Scruff is a not for profit organization that relies on kind hearted volunteers who dedicate their time to rescuing dogs and finding them safe and suitable forever homes through adoption, advocacy and education. Until they reach their well-matched and carefully screened forever homes however, SOS work with all possible resources including veterinarians, volunteers and trainers to ensure that these rescue dogs are provided with loving temporary foster care. No dog is too big or too small, too sick or too temperamental, no breed prefered or given priority. As SOS state, “A dog in need is a dog in need” and they will work with these dogs until they are ready to move on to their next stages in life.
If this sounds like the sort of thing that is close to your heart, we encourage you to come out to our events and show your support (and adopt if you can!) for these pups that so desperately need us, so that they can continue living their best life! Whether it’s purchasing some SOS merch (all proceeds going to SOS), adoption, or simply learning- every little bit counts!
See you there dog lovers!

Cold winter walks: let's face it, you're not ready for a winter hike. You just found out what 'meetup' is.
TIPS: know where you're going. Taking on unnecessary hours to a winter walk might not be a good idea. Get hydrated! I know you may not be sweating because it's cold, but You actually lose a lot of water in the winter because the air is so dry. Don't believe me, need evidence? See your breath in the air- that’s water vapor.
Gear tip: have good boots with grip. Floppy winter boots like Sorel's or Doc Martens are going to take you on a one way trip straight to blister town. Also, if you’re thinking of picking hiking up as a serious hobby, be wary of Hikers Foot and make sure your boots are proper hiking, insulated boots and make sure your socks are moisture wicking and double layer!
If it's icy, get yourself a pair of micro spikes. Those little guys are small and light to pack and can get you through any icy terrain. Buy them at any outdoor store, usually range in price from $20-$80. The higher the price the more intense the spike. I found a pair for $40, mid spike, I've used on dozens of hikes and swear buy them. Back to winter walks: it's just walking, in the winter, yes that's a thing. You'll be fine. Go forth.
Summer hikes, in bear county: bring bear spray, but more importantly, know how to use it. Also, have it accessible, not in the bottom of your pack. There are bear-aware day courses you can take, or just read up online. Basically, most bear sprays give you a total of 8 seconds spray time. Use it wisely. If there is a bear near you that appears to be a threat, give a 2 second warning spray when it's approx 10 meters away. When it approaches, spray 2 seconds again aiming for its face spraying above its height as Gravity will bring the spray down. Obviously wind direction is something you should consider. I know, this sounds like a lot to ask when you're being attacked by a bear, but hey, better in the bears face then yours. Now you're down to 4 seconds of spray, backing away spray it as needed. When the bear stops to clean itself or run, back away to safety, do not run. Running means you're food, and bears can run faster than you.
Prevention is key: hike in groups and make noise. Personally I hate bear bells, but that's just me ( and most mountain hikers). Just be loud, have a good time. In grizzly country, hike in groups of 4. If you see a grizzly, back off. That's the grizzlies home. Don't be that jerk that takes a selfie. Best case scenario, you live and have a cool pic on insta. Worst case scenario, you get mauled to death, and the bear will be hunted and killed, and it will be all your fault. If you're hiking alone in bear country, make noise! Give a big holler in advance of any blind corner or thick brush.
Hiking poles: I know you look like a tool, and you want to look great for your instagram pic, but just put them down for your pics. Hiking poles are life savers. They engage your arms in the hiking which helps out two fold: 1) you take some load off your legs 2) it keeps your momentum going. If you're carrying a large pack, poles are your best friend. On uneven terrain, they are helpful for uphill naturally, but they also help on the downhill. As you walk down hill slamming your poor knees with every step, you can use the poles to reach out and weight bear and reduce the load to your knees. Your knees will thank you after you've crushed your 10,000 steps that day. When buying poles, don't cheap out. Poles go through a lot of abuse on the trail and will break quickly if you get cheap ones. They are expensive and range in price. Personally I went midrange and have used them on easily 1000km of hiking over 2 years already and they're still going strong. When you get into the really expensive stuff, you're paying for the fancy ultra lightweight poles like carbon fiber for the minimalist in the backcountry. If you plan on just using them for day hikes, get the poles that might be 5 ozs heavier, but they will be $50 cheaper. Poles are telescopic to fit onto the side of your pack when you're not using them, so they have different locking systems to open them: twist, or latch. I've met a lot of hardcore hikers who swear but the locking latch. But mine are just the twist-lock and seem to be fine. The only time I run into issues is when I hike in the mountains at higher altitudes in the nasty cold; the air pressure changes mess with the lock system and the cold messes with the metal and sometimes they won't twist and lock into place.
And don't even get me started on all the multipurpose aspects of hiking poles; being used as tent poles for backcountry hikes!

If you haven’t heard of this next Stockist, where have you been hiding? This au courant shop along Yonge Street also boasts locations across Canada (including Vancouver!) which offers affordable men’s and women’s contemporary clothing surrounded by an ultra rustic stylized interior. Clean lines, wood, exposed piping and brick- much like Muttonhead, you can expect it all there. They’ve got you covered with accessories, shoes, clothes- if it’s totally in, they’ll stock it.
Q
WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO MUTTONHEAD, AND WHY DID YOU PURSUE BECOMING A STOCKIST?
A
One of our employees brought the brand to our attention. We liked that it was made and designed in Canada, and had some unique details - like the diamond quilting and waterproof hoodies.
Q
STAFF AT YOUR SHOP: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ONE MAN SHOW? HOW DOES YOUR TEAM WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND INTERACTIVE STOREFRONT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
A
Our store made up of approximately 10 staff members, but it is like one big family. Our focus is on delivering exceptional customer service while creating a stress-free shopping experience for everyone that walks through our doors. We do this by providing a wide selection of affordable items for both men and women and offering our support/expertise when solicited.
Q
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER, AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONNECT WITH THEM / KEEP THEM IN THE LOOP REGARDING NEW ARRIVALS?
A
Our customers are diverse. We are lucky to be centrally located in Toronto across from the Eaton Centre as well as Ryerson University. As a result, we see several students, tourists, and regulars who work in the area shopping in our store. Our new arrivals are always featured at the front, so they are the first items a customer sees when they enter the store.
Q
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE OF YOUR STORE? IS IT A COZY SPACE, OR IS IT A MINIMALIST'S DREAM? DESCRIBE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN WHICH YOUR SHOP IS LOCATED. DOES IT HAVE A FAMILY FEEL, OR IS IT YOUNG AND TRENDY?
A
The atmosphere in the store is like a mix between boutique and warehouse vibes. The store is open concept so customers have lots of space to roam and freely check out our selections. We also have a mezzanine on the second floor featuring all of our sale items which really showcases our floor to ceiling windows and pillars. Being located at Yonge and Shuter, we are surrounded by trendy music venues, restaurants, and other fashion retailers.
Q
DO YOU PRIMARILY CARRY LOCAL PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
A
We carry a wide variety of brands from the US, Europe, and Canada. We love the idea of supporting local businesses and hope to continue towards doing so in the future. Our favourite piece from the Muttonhead SS17 collection has to be the Waterproof Camping Hoodie in Black. The fact that it is stylish but also functional makes it wearable for year-round weather and a great addition to both of our male and females customers. Our bestselling Muttonhead piece has to be the Classic Quilted Crew Crewneck in Grey.
Q
IF YOU HAD TO PICK A MUTTONHEAD OUTFIT FOR A CAMPING TRIP WHICH PIECES WOULD BE IN YOUR PACK?
A
It would have to be the Quilted Sweatpants in Charcoal with the Waterproof Camping hoodie. Both great to have in the event of rain or a chilly evening by the fire.

We love that it’s a Canadian line. Your aesthetic works well with our current vibe.
Q
STAFF AT YOUR SHOP: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ONE MAN SHOW? HOW DOES YOUR TEAM WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND INTERACTIVE STOREFRONT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
A
We have a positive, fun loving work environment. The owner hand selects all of our products, and the staff are all hands-on involved with display, marketing ideas and social media.
Q
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER, AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONNECT WITH THEM / KEEP THEM IN THE LOOP REGARDING NEW ARRIVALS?
A
Our main customer base are younger working people aged 23-35, although we also have a wide range of university students and tourists too since we’re right downtown.
Q
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE OF YOUR STORE? IS IT A COZY SPACE, OR IS IT A MINIMALISTS DREAM? DESCRIBE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN WHICH YOUR SHOP IS LOCATED. DOES IT HAVE A FAMILY FEEL, OR IS IT YOUNG AND TRENDY?
A
Our shop is pretty big, and has a few different vibes in different departments, but overall it’s an upbeat and eclectic space. We are located right in the heart of downtown, close to lots of bars, hotels, and office buildings. Lots of new residential construction happening now which is going to attract a lot more urban core dwellers right into our neighbourhood.
Q
DO YOU PRIMARILY CARRY LOCAL PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
A
We carry over 100 brands- some well known and some up and coming. We stock about 12 Canadian made brands as well as other Canadian brands that are manufactured offshore. It’s important to us because we understand the economic impact that keeping it local has, and because we want to support Canadian companies.

]]>Here at Muttonhead, we know a thing or two when it comes to camping and being in the great outdoors. While we already got you covered (no pun intended) clothing wise, we thought we would also share some of our useful tips and tricks to make your camping experience worry free, and maximize your relaxation time. Get your reading glasses on, kids- and listen up!
Fire Starter:
Before you build your fire, make sure safety always comes first. If you can find big rocks to surround your fire pit with, definitely do it. Always make sure there is someone around to supervise the fire as well; forest fires are a huge no no and fires spread fast so be on your guard. Now that you’ve set your parameters, the way you set up your fire is equally as important. Decide what sort of fire you want to go for. Do you want light, heat, longevity? A little bit of everything perhaps? Make a Teepee fire for sitting around which will give you heat and light. If heat is solely what you’re after, try the Swedish Torch method of setting a vertical log or stump in the middle of the pit and hacking an X at the very top to create a “torch” effect. Need your fire for cooking? Use the “criss cross” method by stacking 3 logs alongside each other and repeat about 2 or three times by stacking the logs alternating ways for a flat top fire.
Turn a chore into a useful hack with collecting dryer lint! Hear us out, you’re probably wondering why we’re talking dryer lint, and truth be told the task does seem a bit gross but saving it is super useful when it comes time for your next camping trip! Simply save the dryer lint and stuff in an empty toilet paper/paper towel roll; instant fire starter! Bonus points if you wrap the entire thing in newspaper like a candy wrapper. Alternatively, If you’re going to be burning your fire for quite a while and ‘go big or go home” is your motto; save those egg cartons too! Throw some match light charcoal in each of the wells and you’ve got a mega starter. It helps to be a hoarder- sometimes.. It’s a hack that helps you clean, recycle, and saves you from one less chore when the last thing you want to do is go around collecting kindle once you’re at your campsite ready to pass out from a long day of hiking.
Putting Your Fire Out:
When it comes time to put out your fire, make sure you are doing it safely and thoroughly. If you know you are going to hit the sac sooner than later, let the fire burn out to ash rather than adding to it. You want your fire to be deprived of as much oxygen as possible, and by using a long stick or shovel to separate any coals from logs will help with that. Slowly pour some water over the fire so you aren’t creating any air pockets that will shoot back at you. Let it fizzle out until the hissing sound stops and throw some sand or dirt on top. You’ve successfully put out your fire, now go and grab that well deserved shut eye.
Food:
Campfire cones: Tin foil is a jack of all trades; so useful for sooo many different things. Gotta dye your hair a million colours? Tin foil. Cooking? Tin foil. DIY cat toy? TIN FOIL, FOLKS! For easy meals and snacks around the campfire, roll up some tin foil cones and stuff it with anything you know you’re going to want to cook together. S'mores cones? Dorritos, cheese and salsa? Pop corn kernels with some homemade seasoning? Speaking of Dorritos, another bonus camping hack! Those tasty corn chips make super sweet kindling (they catch fire super fast with that magic, delicious dust coating!) if you forgot to pack your lint bombs but you always remember your food. Priorities? Hells yeah!
While we’re still talking cones, if you’re craving pancakes no matter where you are- have no fear! You can still have them amongst the great outdoors. Just make the boxed batter ahead of time at home, fill ziplock bags or cake piping cones with the batter, twist at the top and clasp shut with a chip bag clamp. Any recycled squeeze type bottle works just as well, so that if you’ve made a huge batch, you can just seal it up again for the next day. Now you can be brunching it up even from the comfort of your sweet, sweet camp site.
Staying clean:
You know that greasy feeling you get when you’re too busy being one with nature? Yeah it gets worse after like, the second day of camping- and even though you’ve decided long before your trip that you’re going to throw caution to the wind and just stay grimy, it gets to you. Trust us. We all know it’s super annoying to bring a bar of soap with you and then once it's all soapy, wet and used.. You have no clue what to do with it or where to put it. We got you, dude. Stay clean with this soap hack; use a potato peeler and shave single use chunks off a soap bar, and place them all in a small container or ziplock bag. You’ll use up the whole piece and no mushy bar of soap to deal with after. You are SO welcome.
Packing:
Let's talk bugs guys; We all hate them, but they are just an inevitability of camping. To keep them at bay- especially pesky mosquitos- always remember your bug spray, and be sure to wrap up some bundles of sage with some twine or jute rope to toss into the fire at night (jute rope is all natural fibers and also aid in keeping your fire going). Bring lint rollers to get rid of sneaky bugs and ticks on your clothes before you get into your tent to call it a night. Nobody likes snorting a bug while you’re trying to grab some shut eye.
To save space pack small items, toiletries or socks inside your shoes. If you’ve got space to spare in your vehicle, bring along some yoga mats to put under your sleeping bags. It adds a little extra cushion and is a good space-keeping marker for other people's sleeping bags. For a mess free packing experience on your way home and back to reality, bring along some disposable shower caps to wrap the bottoms of your dirty flip flops or boots.
While these are only some of our secrets, we hope you enjoyed this little edition of Camping Tips, and expect that you'll benefit quite nicely on your next camping trip! Stay safe out there, folks!

Dive into this week's Stockist Feature with another rad place to shop Muttonhead; Leeward Surf. Located on the Leeside of the Oregon Coast Range, Leeward Surf focuses on quality goods made to last and brave the waters, not to mention any other beach adventures their clientele needs gearing up for. Their artistic and laid back feel fits right in with the Muttonhead vibe, so if you ever find yourself taking a trip to our neighbours across the way, be sure to stop in for some souvenirs and a surf!
Q
WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO MUTTONHEAD, AND WHY DID YOU PURSUE BECOMING A STOCKIST?
A
I came across Muttonhead for the first time at Capsule in Las Vegas. I was immediately drawn in by the minimalist and unisex designs. Upon looking further i realized the fabrics and sensibility was perfect for our NW climate. It was a major bonus that you guys manufacture everything in North America. We’re always looking for ways to reduce our footprint.
Q
STAFF AT YOUR SHOP: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ONE MAN SHOW? HOW DOES YOUR TEAM WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND INTERACTIVE STOREFRONT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
A
Since we are so new we are really a small team. My brother and I own the shop together. He’s based in Florida currently but has a lot of influence on our board buying and marketing efforts. The shop is staffed by myself, my husband and our awesome part time employee, Simon. Our goal first and foremost is to create an inviting space for our customers to not just shop, but to hang out and share ideas and stories with us and with one another.
The shop is designed with this in mind; In the centre of the store sits a comfy (and stylish) blue velvet couch. We always have surf film up on the projector. We love to chat with and get to know our customers.
Q
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER, AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONNECT WITH THEM / KEEP THEM IN THE LOOP REGARDING NEW ARRIVALS?
A
Our customers are surfers, artists, designers/creative types, outdoorsy people, yoga enthusiasts, van-lifers and more. I think the common thread is a desire to connect with the coast/ the ocean in some way.
We connect with them mostly through our Instagram account; that probably gives folks the best sense of our day-to-day. We also do a weekly newsletter, and regularly post to Facebook. We do a lot of events at the shop which is great opportunity to see our customers face to face. With that said, we are excited to be launching our e-commerce site this summer!
A
I think our atmosphere of the store is cosy while retaining a sense of cleanliness. We have a lot of natural light, bright white walls, and wood accents. Wavy cedar shakes take over the white space above our cash wrap. There’s also tons of plants.
We designed the store with coastal architecture in mind. The goal is to make people feel like they’ve been transported to a dreamy coastal getaway when they enter the shop. The store definitely leans into a boutique aesthetic, but we want it to feel open and accessible to everyone.
Q
DO YOU PRIMARILY CARRY LOCAL PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE & COLOUR WAY FROM THE MUTTONHEAD SS17 COLLECTION AND WHICH PIECES ARE YOUR STRONGEST SELLERS?
A
We try to carry brands that focus on sustainable manufacturing. We believe that manufacturing in north America is a great way to not only reduce our environmental footprint, but helps to ensure better wages and working conditions, while offering customers a better quality product that will last longer and stay out of the landfill as well.
My favourite has got to be the 3-Way Waterproof Pant in Navy. They are perfect for early morning surf sessions in the Northwest. In the Northwest we usually have to hike down to the beach (often in the rain) for a session, so we need functional clothes that can keep us protected from the elements (rain/cold). These pants are super cosy, comfy, and rain/mist/fog proof, all while looking good.
Our strongest seller so far has definitely been the Waterproof Camping Hoodie. They are perfect for our rainy Northwest spring.
Q
IF YOU HAD TO PICK A MUTTONHEAD OUTFIT FOR A CAMPING TRIP WHICH PIECES WOULD BE IN YOUR PACK?
A
3-Way Waterproof Pants, Quilted Crew, and Waterproof Camping Hoodie for sure!

]]>Canada Day is just around the corner and it’s a big birthday this time around. Canada turns 150 years old and we what better way to gear up for it than wearing stuff that was made right here in our beautiful country?!
If you’re going for a more laid back Canada Day, I’m sure you are already aware of the free park passes you can get from Parks Canada! As a special birthday gift Canadian National parks across Canada are free this year, and all you have to do to get your hands on one if sign up for some on their website (https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/voyage-travel/admission)- and it comes straight to your door! This is a great opportunity for folks that have never seen the beautiful sights and parks that our country houses. If your Canada day consists of drinking, partying, and city dwelling- there are tons of firework displays, events and fun things going around in any city. It’s basically just going to be one big party wherever you go!
So in the spirit of this very special year, let's take a second to appreciate the things that make the great white north such a cool place, shall we?
-Free health care so you don't have to worry about prioritizing your health, or your rent!
-Low crime rate. Generally, people feel pretty safe here. I’ve learned quite a bit about the perception of Canada from non- Canadians on my travels, and the consensus seems to be that when people come here whether it’s to live or to visit; they feel safe.
-We actually get all 4 seasons here!
-Our strong economy, and our freedom of speech. Two very important things we are lucky to have.
-We are known for our multiculturality and inclusiveness.
-Canada stands for peace!
-There’s so much space! Canada is BIG AND BEAUTIFUL!
-There are close 2 million Canadian patents. Ever heard of Hockey, the Snow mobile, Walkie-Talkies, Insulin, or the Robertson Screw? Yeah, these are only a few awesome inventions that were brought to life by Canadians.
-We have more freshwater than any other nation, and our tap water is top notch!
-An ontario man invented hawaiian pizza. Common, does it get any better than that?
-And last but not least on our list of Awesomeness, we are the second happiest people in the world! And how could we not be, did you just read all those awesome facts? Nowhere to go but up for us, my friends!
Show your patriotism this Canada day and wear your pride for all to see, Muttonhead’s got you covered, literally!
]]>
For those who don’t reside in Toronto where our two brick and mortar locations stand, there are many other ways to get your hands on some Muttonhead gear. We at Muttonhead have a pretty stacked list of stockists to which we lend curated collections to display and sell alongside brands who share in similar lifestyle and aesthetic. We figured you might like to take a better look at which stores proudly carry Muttonhead, so if you ever find yourself amongst the towns or even Countries they happen to be in, you can stop by for a closer look.
To kick off this “Retail Feature” addition to our blog, we would like to introduce our second feature, Ottawa based lifestyle boutique Stomping Ground. They sprung onto the scene late 2016 with their minimalistic and clean cut vibe, where locals can find a wide variety of apparel and footwear brands as well as accessories and grooming care for men. Check out what they had to say about joining our accomplished list of stockists.
Q
WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO MUTTONHEAD, AND WHY DID YOU PURSUE BECOMING A STOCKIST?
A
We appreciate timeless, quality made goods and as a Canadian independent boutique we love supporting Canadian-made brands. We were also attracted to Muttonhead for its ethical, sweatshop free manufacturing.
Q
STAFF AT YOUR SHOP: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ONE MAN SHOW? HOW DOES YOUR TEAM WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND INTERACTIVE STOREFRONT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
A
At the risk of using the ever-popular cliché, we are definitely a family at Stomping Ground. Our team while small was built with friends who are passionate about street-wear culture and enjoy sharing that culture within our community. We want our customers to feel like they are among friends when they visit us, so whether it's helping you find a new addition to your wardrobe or just chatting over a complimentary espresso, we strive to leave our patrons with a warm and memorable experience.
Q
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER, AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONNECT WITH THEM / KEEP THEM IN THE LOOP REGARDING NEW ARRIVALS?
A
Our customer base is quite diverse. With a heavy emphasis on timeless, heritage brands, we have regular customers from age 16 to 60. What they share is an appreciation for quality goods that stand the test of time. We use a variety of methods to keep them in the informed on what is happening in the shop including social media, newsletters and personal e-mails.
A
Our goal was to create a modern and minimalist space that was still warm and inviting. Straight lines and sharp edges are met with warm lighting, bamboo flooring and ample plant life. Located in the vibrant Glebe neighbourhood of downtown Ottawa, the boutique is surrounded by a mix of turn of the century family homes, new condominium developments and large base of independent businesses. The main strip is known for its diverse mix of independent businesses which includes; restaurants, boutiques and local grocers.
Q
DO YOU PRIMARILY CARRY LOCAL PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE & COLOUR WAY FROM THE MUTTONHEAD SS17 COLLECTION AND WHICH PIECES ARE YOUR STRONGEST SELLERS?
A
We carry a mix of local and international product. Being a home-grown, independent business, it is important for us to showcase and support local entrepreneurs when possible. Our customers appreciate the notion of supporting local business and re-investing within their community.
Q
IF YOU HAD TO PICK A MUTTONHEAD OUTFIT FOR A CAMPING TRIP WHICH PIECES WOULD BE IN YOUR PACK?
A
I always prepare for the worst when camping, so if there is even a slight chance of rain, I would definitely want the waterproof 5-panel, Waterproof Rain Camping hoodie and 3 Way Pant.

]]>MEET THE MUTTONHEAD STOCKISTS
Nettle’s Tale
This edition of Retail Feature should spark the interest of all of our Muttonhead gals out there. This time around, we bring to you a Vancouver based Women's swimwear brand that has branched out into a whole lifestyle shop for the quintessential West Coast lady. Nestled in Gastown’s busy cobbled streets, Nettle’s Tale offers a safe and comfortable space for women that are ethically and locally conscious while providing a non- judgemental, like minded environment. Check out what they had to say about joining our accomplished list of stockists.
Q:
WHAT INITIALLY DREW YOU TO MUTTONHEAD, AND WHY DID YOU PURSUE BECOMING A STOCKIST?
A:
Muttonhead is proudly Canadian from the designs the brand produces, to the outdoor lifestyle the apparel is made for and where the products are made, we felt the brand really aligned with what our brand and our store is all about.
Q:
STAFF AT YOUR SHOP: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ONE MAN SHOW? HOW DOES YOUR TEAM WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE A WELCOMING AND INTERACTIVE STOREFRONT FOR YOUR CUSTOMER BASE?
A:
Our storefront is birthed from our in-house brand Nettle’s Tale Swimwear. It is a line of swimwear designed after actual women in our lives and made in Vancouver, BC. Our store is a reflection of the aesthetic of the swimwear line and adventure apparel and items our swimwear customers would need for everyday life and their adventures. We are all about making sure women are entering a warm and welcoming, attentive, non-judgemental customer service experience. We do this by having a store that feels like a cozy cabin and the vibe to match.
Q:
WHO IS YOUR CUSTOMER, AND HOW DO YOU LIKE TO CONNECT WITH THEM / KEEP THEM IN THE LOOP REGARDING NEW ARRIVALS?
A:
Our customer base is primarily female because of the swimwear brand. We like to make sure we are regularly connecting with our customers on social media and through direct emails. Letting them know what’s new in the shop that week for product and in store events. This summer we are planning on having our first Nettle’s Tale meet up at the beach or community pool. It’s a fun way for us to connect with our customers while we are all wearing our Nettle’s Tale Shop gear.
Q:
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE OF YOUR STORE? IS IT A COZY SPACE, OR IS IT A MINIMALISTS DREAM? DESCRIBE THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN WHICH YOUR SHOP IS LOCATED. DOES IT HAVE A FAMILY FEEL, OR IS IT YOUNG AND TRENDY?
A:
We are located in the heart of Vancouver, on a more locally made and owned strip of businesses, in a heritage neighbourhood called Gastown. If you are ever a tourist in Vancouver or a local you will most definitely end up in Gastown. Sandwiched between Chinatown, downtown, and ocean views it is a neighbourhood that boasts of cobble stoned streets, amazing restaurants, incredible coffee, and street style shopping. Our store is small and cozy and we like customers to feel as if they are walking into a cabin you would find along the West Coast of BC. In a sense the store is for all ages (as it has a throwback, nostalgic “Heritage Canadian” vibe), but done in a way that appeals to Millennials idealizing a life before technology.
Q:
DO YOU PRIMARILY CARRY LOCAL PRODUCTS? IF SO, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE STYLE & COLOUR WAY FROM THE MUTTONHEAD SS17 COLLECTION AND WHICH PIECES ARE YOUR STRONGEST SELLERS?
A:
We carry ethically made goods, so this does mean that a lot of our goods are made in Canada or the US. It is important for us from an ethical standpoint because we should be good stewards of our planet and mankind alike, but also from an economical perspective. We want to support those living in our community with our dollars. Our hottest Muttonhead seller is the Waterproof Camping Hoodie and it is not hard to guess why! It rains all the time, non-stop in Vancouver and the Waterproof Camping Hoodie is such a fun design that it is different from the traditional raincoat for the West Coast dweller.
Q:
IF YOU HAD TO PICK A MUTTONHEAD OUTFIT FOR A CAMPING TRIP WHICH PIECES WOULD BE IN YOUR PACK?
A:
If it was off-season (post September), I would pack my Merino Toque, Waterproof Camping Hoodie, and 3-Way Waterproof Pants. If it was summer, I would bring my Light Denim Muttonhead 5 Panel and Rust Canvas Shorts, and a Nettle’s Tale Swimsuit of course!
